Braveheart: 25 Years Later

Year 2020 marks the silver anniversary of the box office hit Braveheart. It was released in the United States on the 24th day of May, 1995. Not only did it earn well, it also garnered five Academy Awards including Best Picture and for Mel Gibson, Best Director.

I no longer hold the film in high esteem the way I used when I was young. The reason for this is because of its serious historical inaccuracies. I don't have to discuss these here since they are well documented elsewhere on the web. Any interested fellow who knows how to use Google could find them. Historical accuracy is a big deal for me. I could only imagine what disgust I may feel if  the big guns of film-making would distort the history of my beloved Philippines.

But that doesn't mean I'm junking the film altogether. There must be a good reason why it touched the hearts of many. In the book Burden of Truth, which is a collection of Breakpoint transcripts, Chuck Colson remarked concerning Braveheart:

"Good films deal with deep human problems in a way that teaches right and wrong . . . Braveheart actually makes righteous behavior look exciting and attractive."

The deep heart problems dealt with in the film as pointed out by Colson are “the horror of murder”, “the shame of treachery”, and “the lasting guilt of betrayal”. The virtues made to look exciting and attractive are courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. Then my favorite lines; William Wallace told the noblemen of Scotland:

”You're so concerned with squabbling for the scraps from Longshank's table that you've missed your God given right to something better. There is a difference between us. You think the people of this country exist to provide you with position. I think your position exists to provide those people with freedom. And I go to make sure that they have it.”

I like it because this is a profound theology of government and privilege. There is an acknowledgement that position and privilege are given by God's sovereign will. Yet they are given for a purpose. It was not for the self-interest of those in power, but to serve the people. It is not for the enrichment and comfort of a few but for the deliverance of the people from the chains of tyranny and oppression. It re-echoes Isaiah's voice:

Woe to those enacting crooked statutes

and writing oppressive laws

to keep the poor from getting a fair trial

and to deprive the needy among my people of justice,

so that widows can be their spoil

and they can plunder the fatherless.

To the generation that saw the film: if you still like Braveheart yet you believe that one must never oppose or even speak against the oppressive ruling powers, then you have to resolve a big inconsistency. If you dislike Braveheart now, well congratulations! At least you are consistent. But I can't stop but think that your values may also have changed, most probably from good to bad-- 25 years later.

Isang Pagbubulay Matapos ang Halalan

Ilang mga botante mula sa Classes A, B and C ang dismayado sa resulta ng katatapos na halalan. Sa kanilang pananaw, may mga nakapasok sa Magic 12 na hindi naman karapat-dapat at merong mga karapat-dapat na malayo sa magic 12.

Ang kanilang sinisisi ay ang mga botante mula sa Classes D and E. Sila yung mga nasa pinakamababa sa mga antas ng lipunan.Karaniwan, sila ay may kakulangan sa edukasyon at hikahos sa buhay. Dahil sa kanilang kalagayan, marami sa kanila ay may mababaw na batayan sa pagpili ng mga iboboto: sayaw-awit sa mga patalastas sa telebisyon; matunog na apelyido mula sa mga angkan may dinastiyang politikal, mga pangalang kasali sa sampol ballot na iniabot ni Kapitan; at pinakamalala: mga kandidatong bumibili ng boto gamit ang salapi at groceries.

Upang ipakita ang pagkakaiba ng pagpili ng mga botanteng nagmula sa magkaibang antas ng lipunan, gagamitin natin ang datos mula sa exit polls ng Social Weather Stations noong 2010. Sa eleksyon na iyon, 15% lang ng mga botanteng nakatapos ng kolehiyo ang bumoto pabor sa kandidatong hinatulan ng hukuman sa kasong pandarambong. Pero sa mga botanteng elementarya ang tinapos, isang malaking hiwa na 31% ang bumoto para sa kanya.

Para sa mga botante mula sa Classes A, B, and C, ang mga kababayang mula sa Classes D and E ang nagpapapangit sa resulta ng mga halalan. Maaaring tama sila. Sa aking pagsang-ayon, hindi ko nilalahat ang mga mula sa Classes D and E. Meron din sa kanila ang matalino sa pagpili. Pero hindi maikakaila na napakarami mula sa antas na ito ang hindi marunong pumili ng mga taong dapat ihalal.

Subalit pagdating sa pagpili sa Diyos, ang lahat ay pantay-pantay. Walang kalamangan ang mga mula sa Classes A, B and C sa mga Classes D and E. Lahat sila ay pare-pareho ng saloobin. Lahat ng tao mula sa iba't ibang antas ng lipunan ay pare-parehong umaayaw sa Diyos. Ang lahat ay naghihimagsik laban sa kanya. Ayaw nilang kilalanin ang Diyos bilang Hari ng Daigdig.

Paano ko nasabi ito? Ito ay aking nasabi dahil sa nakasaad sa bibliya:

"Walang matuwid, wala kahit isa.
"Walang nakakaunawa, walang naghahanap sa Diyos.
Ang lahat ay lumihis ng landas at nagpakasama.
Walang gumagawa ng mabuti, wala kahit isa." Roma 3:10-12

Subalit dahil sa kanyang mayamang habag, nagliligtas ang Diyos mula sa Classes A, B, C, D and E. Yun nga lamang, ayon na rin sa kanyang perpektong karunungan, minarapat niya na mas marami ang kanyang ililigtas mula sa mga mas mababang mga antas. Sa anong layunin? Upang walang sinumang magmalaki sa kanyang harapan.

Ano kaya kung ganito ang iyong patotoo:

"Praise the Lord, naniwala ako sa ebanghelyo. Minsan lang ipinaliwanag sa akin, naunawaan ko agad. Buti na lang matalino ako. Hayaan na niyo yung mga tamatanggi sa ebanghelyo; Low I.Q. kasi ang mga 'yan."

Sino ang naparangalan? Sino ang naluwalhati? Ang Diyos ba? Hindi. Ikaw ang naparangalan. Ikaw ang naluwalhati. Ang galing-galing mo kasi.

Anu-ano ang nararapat na tugon sa katotohanang ito:

Una, PAGPAPAKUMBABA dahil nalaman natin na walang anumang katangiang taglay natin ang dahilan kung bakit tayo naligtas.

Ikalawa, PASASALAMAT dahil tayo, bagamat mga hindi karapat-dapat ay tumanggap ng masaganang pabor mula sa Panginoon.

Ikatlo, PAGLUWALHATI sa Diyos, dahil ito ang layunin niya sa pagliligtas sa atin-- ang matanyag ang kanyang dakilang ngalan.

1 Corinto 1:26-31: Mga kapatid, alalahanin ninyo ang inyong katayuan noong kayo'y tawagin ng Diyos. Iilan lamang sa inyo ang matatawag na marunong, makapangyarihan at maharlika sa paningin ng tao. Subalit pinili ng Diyos ang mga naturingang hangal sa sanlibutan upang hiyain ang marurunong, at pinili niya ang mga naturingang mahihina upang hiyain ang malalakas. Pinili niya ang mga pangkaraniwang tao, mga hampas lupa, at mga mahihina sa sanlibutang ito upang ipawalang saysay ang mga kinikilala ng sanlibutan. Kaya't walang sinumang makakapagmalaki sa harap ng Diyos. Sa kanya nagmula ang buhay na taglay ninyo dahil sa pakikipag-isa ninyo kay Cristo Jesus na siyang ginawang karunungan natin. Sa pamamagitan din niya, tayo'y itinuring na matuwid, ginawang banal at iniligtas ng Diyos. Kaya nga, tulad ng nasusulat, "Ang sinumang nais magmalaki, ang ipagmalaki niya'y ang ginawa ng Panginoon." WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH: Metaphors of Faithful Christian Service in Difficult Times (part 1 of 4)

"You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops."  (2Tim. 2:1-6 ESV)

In a gathering hosted by the Christian Evangelical Ministerial Fellowship (CEMF) in celebration of the National Bible Week, Dagupan City Administrator Vlad Mata urged the churches to approach the civil authorities and offer their help in nation-building. That's a very good idea. We become productive citizens of our community and at the same time, we get opportunities to share the gospel of Christ. One such project is CEMF's cooperation with the City PopCom office in conducting mass weddings and marriage counseling. Hopefully through it, the couples will learn about strong marriages and responsible parenthood. And most of all, may they know Jesus as Lord and Savior as participating churches reach out to them.

We should cooperate with the leaders of our community while we are still welcome. Let me repeat that phrase:  "while we are still welcome". There's an element of uncertainty in our times. Now we are still counted by the government as partners in nation-building but it may not always stay this way. There may come a time when we will offer our helping hand to our nation's leaders and they will tell us: "You have no part in nation-building unless renounce your gospel."

There was a time when our brothers in America were very much a part of nation-building in that part of the world. Billy Graham, then the icon of evangelicalism was present in at least 10 presidential inaugurations. Though there has always been opposition to the gospel in the government and everywhere, at least Christians then were free to speak their minds and were recognized by the government as partners in the development of the nation.

Something radical has changed in just four years. Barrack Obama has been reelected and the first person who was  invited to lead the opening prayer in this 2nd inaugural is Louie Giglio, pastor of  Passion City Church in Atlanta. But some opposed the invitation. For what reason? Because Pastor Giglio preached a biblical message on homosexuality almost 20 years ago. Pastor Giglio is not even the most vocal preacher against homosexuality. By his own admission, he did not prioritize this issue for the past 15 years.

Because of the pressure applied against him, he withdrew from participating in the inaugural ceremonies. But even without withdrawing, he will be disinvited anyway. That is clear from the statement issued by the Presidential Inaugural Committee:

“We were not aware of Pastor Giglio’s past comments at the time of his selection, and they don’t reflect our desire to celebrate the strength and diversity of our country at this inaugural. Pastor Giglio was asked to deliver the benediction in large part because of his leadership in combating human trafficking around the world. As we now work to select someone to deliver the benediction, we will ensure their beliefs reflect this administration’s vision of inclusion and acceptance for all Americans.”

There you have it! Everyone who opposes this Administration's agenda can't be a partner in nation-building. By this standard, even Rick Warren who led the prayer in Obama's first inaugural is now unwelcome.

The present is therefore a tough time for our Christian brothers in America. Yet the church had been in tougher times before. In Timothy's time, faithful gospel ministers were not only excluded from participation in nation-building; they were arrested, imprisoned and sometimes executed. In fact, his mentor in the faith was one of those in prison. With no modern postal system, it is possible that by the time Timothy were reading this letter, Paul's already dead.

The time was so tough that Paul reports: "At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them." (2Tim. 4:16)

There are indications that due to the toughness of times, Timothy's faith was severely weakened. He had neglected his gift (2 Tim. 1:6) and Paul needed to remind him that they did not received a spirit of fear. Furthermore, Paul saw the need to exhort him to "be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus" (2:1 ESV). The passive voice is noteworthy here. Though Paul is issuing a command that Timothy should obey, it will not be Timothy strengthening himself. The strengthening is by God's grace found in Jesus.

Without grace we would all be weaklings in tough times. As weaklings, we have this tendency to either deny the faith or dilute it so we could avoid the hardships that accompany faithfulness. Without God's grace, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would have had feared the burning furnace and would have had bowed down before the grand idol. Without God's grace, Daniel would have had abstained from praying to the true God for 30 days in fear of the lions. Daniel and his friends were strong in tough times not because of any inherent strength in them but because they sought strength in God's grace.

In order to encourage the younger pastor, Paul used three metaphors of strength:
1. a devoted Soldier
2. a rule-abiding Athlete
3. a hardworking Farmer

To these metaphors we shall turn in the succeeding posts.

Maaari bang matalo ang Diyos sa halalan?

Buwan ng Mayo, taong 1998, sa kabila ng ipinapatupad na political ad ban, bumili ng ilang oras na air time ang ilang prominenteng evangelical leaders sa PTV-4 upang ipalabas ang programang "Jesus' Declaration of Victory"-- (JDV-- mga initials ni Jose De Venecia). Doon ay inihayag ng mga evangelical leaders na ito na si De Venecia raw ang God's anointed bilang susunod na pangulo ng bansa.

Lumipas ang araw ng halalan at nagkabilangan. Ang resulta: landslide victory pabor kay Joseph Estrada, ang kandidatong pinanigan ng mga grupong Iglesia ni Cristo at El Shaddai. Nabigo ang "anointed" raw ng Panginoon.

Maaari nga bang matalo ang Diyos sa halalan? Maaari bang mabigo ang Panginoon na ilagay sa puwesto ang kanyang mga napili? Tignan natin ang patotoo ng bibliya:

Paano nagkaroon ng kapangyarihan ang Pharoah ng Ehipto?

Romans 9:17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." (NIV)

Paano nagkaroon ng kapangyarihan si Pontious Pilate?

John 19:10-11 ""Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"

Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above..."

Paano nagkaroon ng kapangyarihan ang mga emperador ng Roma tulad nina Nero at Domitian?

Romans 13:1 "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

Ayon sa Romans 13:1, lahat ng pamamahala at awtoridad ay galing sa Panginoon-- kahit nga sa mga lugar kung saan bawal ang pangangaral ng ebanghelyo.

 Demokrasya man o sosyalista; diktadorya, military junta, parliamentary, monarkiya-- LAHAT nito ay galing sa Panginoon.

Psalm 75:6-7 "No one from the east or the west
    or from the desert can exalt a man.
But it is God who judges:
    He brings one down, he exalts another.

Daniel 2:21 "He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them."

Daniel 4:25 "... the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes."

Ibinibigay niya ang kapangyarihan sa sinumang kanyang nais. Maaari niya itong ibigay sa isang pastol tulad ni David o sa isang housewife tulad ni Cory o sa isang racist tulad ni Hitler. Maaari rin niya itong bawiin anumang oras kaya siya rin ang dahilan kung bakit inatake sa puso si Manuel Roxas noong 1948 at kung bakit bumagsak ang eroplano ni Ramon Magsaysay noong 1957. Hindi rin tatamaan ng bala si John F. Kennedy kung wala siyang pahintulot. Maaari siyang gumamit ng People Power tulad ng EDSA 1 at EDSA 2. Maaari rin niyang biguin ang People Power tulad ng EDSA 3. Maaari rin niya itong ipagkait sa iyo kahit kasinsikat ka ni FPJ o kasinyaman ni Manny Villar o kahit mag-kudeta ka ng maraming beses tulad ni Gringo Honasan.

Kahit pa may flying voters, kahit pa may vote buying, kahit pa may dagdag-bawas, kahit pa pumalya ang PCOS machines (na hindi naman)-- ang Diyos na aking sinasamba ay hindi natatalo sa halalan.

In the precinct where i voted, i have found out that only 28 out of 948 voters voted for Bro. Eddie, according to the Comelec ER's. But then what literally shock me is that i personally know that most of my folks voted in that precinct. The votes could have reach to a hundred or more atleast.

I would like to commend Bro. Eddie Villanueva for writing a much needed letter to pacify his supporters. Before he conceded defeat, his fan page at Facebook were filled with bitterness and sour graping. See samples below Villanueva's letter.


Sa lahat ng nagtiwala at sumuporta sa Bangon Pilipinas,

Ito na siguro ang pinakamahirap na sulat na ginawa ko. Mahirap kasing isalin sa salita at pagkasyahin sa isang papel lang ang nag-uumapaw na pasasalamat sa puso ko.

Natapos na ang eleksyon at nagbigay na ng kanilang mandato ang sambayanang Pilipino. Hindi pumabor sa atin ang mandato ng eleksyon. Pero hindi ibig sabihin na nasayang ang prinsipyong pinanindigan natin sa labang ito.

Gaya ninyo, nasasaktan din ako. Pero maiibsan ang sakit na ito kung sama-sama pa rin tayong magpapalakasan sa bawat isa at hindi matitinag sa patuloy na pagdalangin sa Diyos na magkaroon ng matuwid na pamahalaan sa ating minamahal na bansa!

A paraphrased prayer from Daniel 3: 16-18: God, we do not need to defend ourselves in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it and You will rescue us. But even if You do not, we want the Filipinos to know that we remain steadfast in our service to God and country.

We have given joy to the heart of God as we supported His cause for the Philippines. Now, let the joy of the LORD be our strength!

       This concerns Bro. Eddie Villanueva's controversial statements over the flock of Apollo Quiboloy. Is there an internal system within JIL by which biblical church discipline as mandated in Matthew 18:15-17 and 1 Corinthians 5 could be implemented?

        My concern is not political. My concern is the witness of the evangelical community. The Apostle Paul teaches that sin will not restrict its effect to the offender. Like a little yeast, it will affect the entire batch of dough (1 Corinthians 5:6).

       Given the prominence of Villanueva within the evangelical community, his sin is no small yeast. The extent of his influence will not be limited to the JIL churches. It threatens to affect us all. JIL should put him under disciplinary action-- not to harm him but to restore him and to fix the damage that has been done to the evangelical churches.

Nagbigay si Mr. Villanueva ng dalawang dahilan kung bakit niya ginawa yung kanyang ginawa doon sa pagtitipon ng kawan ni Quiboloy. Ang Una ay biblical reason at pangalawa ay tungkol sa pamamalakad ng pamahalaan ng walang diskriminasyon.

1. BIBLICAL REASON:

Ika niya: "Listen carefully please, number one biblical reason, 1 Corinthians 9 if i need to be a Jew, I have to be a Jew. if i need to be a Roman i have to be a Roman, if that is the only way i can gain these people for the kingdom of God."

2. NON-DISCRIMINATORY POLICY

Ika ulit ni Villanueva: "Number two reason, si John F Kennedy (student po ako ng history nahalukay ko po ito) the first Catholic President of the United States of America when he assumed office in the white house he was visited by a Catholic Cardinal obviously asking a special favor prejudicial against the non-catholics. Anong sabi ni John F Kennedy? "I am sorry Cardinal, my religion is secondary to me. First and foremost I am elected as president of all American people." Kaya sabi ng mga historian at mga political analyst, despite the weaknesses of  John F. Kennedy as a man... president John F. Kennedy was considered by history as one of the great presidents of america because of his non-discriminatory policy."

 Yung kanyang dahilan na non-discriminatory policy ay hindi ko masyadong bibigyan ng diin. Pero nais ko lang sabihin na hindi naman humihingi ng special favor ang mga born again. Puwede namang ibigay ang nararapat ibigay sa lahat ng Pilipino sa ilalim ng batas nang hindi sumasang-ayon sa doktrina ng mga demonyo. Hindi naman plataporma ang ginamit niyang panghikayat sa kanila kundi mga salitang tiyak na kikiliti sa pandinig ng mga taong nais manatili sa kadiliman. "Men loved darkness" ang sabi ni Apostol Juan sa John 3:19-- kung papupurihan mo ang kanilang madilim na paniniwala, tiyak mamahalin ka nila. Kaya naman panay ang sigawan at palakpakan habang nagsasalita si Villanueva sa harap ng Quiboloy crowd.

Ang bibigyang diin ko ay ang sinasabi ni Villanueva na biblical reason Ito ay ang  1 Corinthians 9:19-23: " Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings" (NIV)

Ang mga tinutukoy diyan ng Apostol ay mga adjustments within scriptural limits. Halimbawa na lang ay yung pagpapatuli ni Apostol Pablo sa kanyang kasamang si Timoteo alang-alang sa mga Hudyo (Acts 16:3). Bagamat hindi sila nasa ilalim ng kautusan, nagpasailalim sila sa kautusan upang maging madali para sa mga Hudyo ang pakikinig ng ebanghelyo. Minsan ay sumailalim rin siya sa mga purification ceremonies upang burahin ang ipinagkakalat ng iba na iniwan na raw niya ang kautusan ni Moises (Acts 21:20-26). Wala siyang pakinabang sa mga seremonya ng Kautusan pero sumailalim pa rin siya dito alang-alang sa mga kaluluwa ng mga taong inaabot nila.

Pagdating naman sa mga Hentil, within Scriptural bounds ulit, nakibahagi siya sa Gentile customs. Hindi kasali dito yung paggawa at pagsabi ng mga bagay na malinaw na salungat sa bibliya. Kung sa Pilipinas maglilingkod si Pablo, kakain rin siya ng balot maski gaano kalaki ang sisiw; magmamano rin siya sa mga nakakatanda at sasagot ng po at opo; maaaring magsusuot rin siya ng bahag tulad ng mga katutubo-- pero hindi niya kukunsintihin ang pagsamba nila sa mga anito.

Ganito ang komentaryo ni John Macarthur:

 " If a person is offended by God’s Word, that is his problem. If he is offended by biblical doctrine, standards, or church discipline, that is his problem. That person is offended by God. But if he is offended by our unnecessary behavior or practices—no matter how good and acceptable those may be in themselves—his problem becomes our problem. It is not a problem of law but a problem of love, and love always demands more than the law “Whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone wants to sue you, and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two” (Matt. 5:39-41)." 1 Corinthians, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary

So the adjustments Paul was talking about for the sake of Jews and Gentiles are just on unnecessary behavior or practices which may serve as stumbling blocks in reaching the lost. Its not about giving approval to evil doctrines and deeds. You must not call a person who spreads destructive doctrines as "a preacher of righteousness"; It remains that we should not call as "mga kapwa ko taga-langit" those who embrace abominable doctrines. We should not give our "Amen" to a mission born out of the darkness.

An Unusual Birthday Meditation

It's my birthday! In years past, my favorite meditation for this occasion was God's love for me from eternity past to the present. I marveled about how that sperm cell out of millions ever found that egg cell. What a delight to think that God formed me in my mother's womb.

But this year is different. Its NOT because the great truths I wrote in the preceding paragraph are worthless now. Of course not! I still treasure those truths. I just can't shake-off the Villanueva-Quiboloy controversy out of my mind.

For the record: I have already observed Eddie Villanueva's slide to ecumenism a long time ago. During the 25th Anniversary of JIL (2003), he declared: "I don't care what your religion is. What's important is we are all the People of God. We cannot allow the Devil to have a fiesta on our nation." 

What did he mean when he said he doesn't care what your religion is as long as you belong to the people of God? Mine is just a suspicion but it makes sense. By that time he was (perhaps still is) the chairman of God's People Coalition for Righteousness, an umbrella organization of Evangelicals, Catholics, and Muslims (perhaps other groups were also represented). That organization was very visible during Armida Siguion-Reyna's stint as chairman of MTRCB. These religious groups actively opposed obscenity in Philippine movies which was then a trend.

In the past, he has already labeled those who deny the essentials of the evangelical faith as "God's people"  so calling the members of Quiboloy's cult as citizens of heaven is not really a new thing.

Also, in his 2004  Miting d'Avance, there was an interfaith confession of sin among Evangelicals, Catholics and Muslims.

This is an unusual birthday meditation. But it is good to be reminded that ecumenism is a dangerous thing. Let us learn from the mistakes of Bro. Eddie.

My musings about Cindy Jacobs' prophecy on Eddie Villanueva's presidency

I think this is a good follow-up to my earlier post relating to Bill Hamon's prophecy. I have long ceased watching Eddie Villanueva's programs so I was not familiar with the recent prophecy uttered by Cindy Jacobs. Today, I watched it for the first time on Youtube. I transcribed a portion of it and I will state my musings below the video clip.

Starting at 5:34, Jacobs says: "There's a lot of things God wants to make happen in the earth. He wants his will done on the earth as it is in heaven. But his will will always be done but sometimes it can be delayed to another generation because people will not stand up and fight. In 2006, I was at Los Angeles, California in a hotel. I had not seen Bro. Eddie and Sis. Dory for a few years. I came up and asked if I could pray for him. I don't really understand the political climate of the Philippines at that time. And I said to him, "Bro. Eddie God showed me its his will for you to be the president of the Philippines. That is God's will. But when whether.. listen to me. Its not fate. Its going to take a nation of Davids that says we no longer stand for a corrupt nation... Bro. Eddie, you will always love your sheep but God is calling you to go from the priestly anointing to the kingly anointing."

My musings:

1. Cindy Jacobs is playing it safe. If Villanueva fails again, she will put the blame on us because we did not stand up and fight.

2.  There is a possibility that for the third time, Villanueva will run again in 2016. Jacobs says that unfulfilled prophecies are not frustrated, just delayed. 

3.  I now understand why calls for Bro. Eddie to stay with his flock and be faithful to his calling as an evangelist fell on deaf ears. Its because he believes he has received a "kingly anointing" as opposed to "priestly anointing"-- whatever those terms mean.

4.  Some Pro-Eddie Christians are so militant in supporting their candidate because they see themselves as a "nation of Davids".

5.  When other evangelical Christians support other candidates (perhaps Pro-Noynoy or Pro-Villar), some Pro-Eddie Christians see them outside the "nation of Davids". They refuse to say "No" to a corrupt nation. (In effect, they are saying "YES" to corruption).

Yeast in the Dough

In a way, this is part two of my previous post. As I see it, there is a link between economic improvement and the advancement of the gospel in Eddie Villanueva's thought. Let me explain.

I was an avid viewer of Villanueva's Jesus the Healer TV Program. One of Villanueva's passions way back then is Bill Hamon's prophecy in 1992. Hamon prophesied that within the span of 20 years, God will use three presidents to transform the Philippines into "The America of Asia". There will be so much economic prosperity that the Philippines could afford sending missionaries. The Philippines will be the "launching pad of the gospel" says the (false) prophecy.

Thus, Villanueva has two great dreams:

1. economic glory for the Philippines that will lead to

2. the advancement of the gospel message to the nations with the Philippines as the launching pad.

Let's suppose Villanueva wins and resides in Malacanang for the next six years, will the cause of the gospel be advanced if Villanueva refuses to repent?

Again, I DON'T THINK SO.

Oh God, have mercy on us!

Ten Percent of Registered Voters for Ang Ladlad?

In their campaign to convince people that homosexuality is an acceptable lifestyle both socially and morally, you will often hear the statistical claim that 10% of the population are homosexuals. This is cited confidently and authoritatively as if it is an unquestionable fact.

The latest person to make this assertion is Danton Remoto of the group Ang Ladlad. Should the Supreme Court affirm the legitimacy of Ang Ladlad as a party list group, Remoto expects that 10% of the 49 million registered voters will cast their votes in Ang Ladlad's favor. I am not an election expert, but as I recall, that would be enough to secure three seats in the House of Representatives.

Yet is it true that 10% of the population are homosexuals?

The source of the statistic frequently used is a study made more than 60 years ago led by a man named Alfred Kinsey. From the earliest days, the flaws in the study were evident as it doesn't represent the general population.

• Approximately 25% of the 5,300 individuals studied were prison inmates-- therefore they cannot have physical contact with the opposite sex.
• Kinsey himself admits that several hundred male prostitutes were used in this study.
• Volunteers were used in the study. Sexuality is a very sensitive issue that those who have the guts to voluntarily submit their selves to a study like this cannot represent the general population (consider also the more conservative culture of the 1940's)

The flaws in the study are so glaring that Paul Gebhard,  Kinsey's successor as director of the Kinsey Institute for Sex Research attempted to clean up the mess in 1979 of the defects mentioned above and he came up with the conclusion that "none of Kinsey's original estimates were significantly affected" by these flaws. But Kinsey Institute's credibility is already in question and other studies say otherwise (click here). Another factor that affects their credibility are the serious allegations of child molestation during the course of the study.(Click here)

Aside from these flaws, the study is not being quoted accurately by those who use it:

"Kinsey did not say that 10 percent of the entire U.S. population was homosexual. Rather, he affirmed that ten percent of white American males were "more or less" exclusively homosexual for at least three years of their lives between the ages of 16 and 65. The statistic for females was five percent. The actual percentage of those thought to be exclusively homosexual for their entire lives was only four percent of men and two or three percent of women, all based on his allegedly representative sample of the population." (Joseph Gudel, Homosexuality: Fact and Fiction; Christian Research Journal)

Am I saying that Ang Ladlad cannot win in May? No. All I'm saying is the statistic being cited is seriously defective.

It is very possible that Ang Ladlad could still occupy three seats in the Lower House.Why? Because even heterosexuals could advocate the homosexual cause. As it is written: "Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them." (Romans 1:32 NIV)

Bagamat ibinasura ng Commission on Elections (COMELEC) ang aplikasyon ng Ang Ladlad bilang isang lehitimong party list group, ang basa ko sa mga nangyayari (nawa'y mali ako), hindi magtatagal ay mabibigyan rin ng akreditasyon ang grupong ito. Kung hindi man sila makakahabol sa Mayo 2010, malamang sa 2013, pasok na sila.

Hindi maikakaila ang patuloy na paglakas ng suporta para sa gay rights movement dito sa ating bansa. Kamakailan ay nagpahayag ng suporta sa kanila ang Commission on Human Rights (CHR), iba't ibang mga bigating pulitiko, at iba pang mga maiimpluwensyang tao.

Malakas rin ang impluwensya ng kulturang kanluran sa atin lalo na ang Estados Unidos. Ang kanilang kasalukuyang Pangulo na si Barack Obama ay nagpapakita ng sigasig upang maisulong ang adhikain ng mga LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender). Ito ay bahagi ng kanyang pahayag:

"that's why I support ensuring that committed gay couples have the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple in this country. I believe strongly in stopping laws designed to take rights away and passing laws that extend equal rights to gay couples. I've required all agencies in the federal government to extend as many federal benefits as possible to LGBT families as the current law allows. And I've called on Congress to repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and to pass the Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act." (-Pres. Barack Obama)

Hindi lang mga karapatan ang ipinangako ni Obama sa kanila kundi ang pagtanggap sa kanilang mga relasyon bilang MABUTI at KAAYA-AYA:

"You will see a time in which we as a nation finally recognize relationships between two men or two women as just as real and admirable as relationships between a man and a woman..." (-Pres. Obama) (kasunod ay MASIGABONG PALAKPAKAN mula sa mga tagapakinig)

Ang paglakas ng puwersang LGBT rights sa Pilipinas ay mahahalata sa pananaw ng karamihan. Hindi na nila ito itinuturing bilang kasalanan o paghihimagsik laban sa Diyos na siyang may akda ng dalawang kasarian (lalaki at babae). Sa halip, ito ay ibinibilang na normal at kanais-nais. Isang patunay nito ay ang isang awiting namamayagpag sa himpapawid mula sa Dagtang Lason na pinamagatang Nagmamahal ako ng Bakla.

Ipaabot mo sa kanila ang iyong pagtutol sa kanilang mga pananaw at sila ay sisigaw ng "FOUL !!! Diskriminasyon 'yan". Malaki ang posibilidad na darating ang araw dito sa Pilipinas na kahit kasinganda't kasintalino ka ni Carrie Prejean, katakot takot pa ring mga pag-aalipusta, pangungutsa at pang-iinsulto ang tatanggapin mo dahil lamang ikaw ay tutol sa mga adhikain ng LGBT rights.
